Qualified Charitable Distributions Extended for 2014

With the passage of the Taxpayer Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014, the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA is available through the end of the year under normal rules.  This means that you can, if you’re age 70½ or older, make direct distributions from your IRA to a qualified charity or charities, not counting the distribution as income and not itemizing the charitable contribution.

  1. question? – how many years in a row has the QCD been in effect? I am trying to plan my contributions for 2015 and would like to do it that way to reduce my taxable income and be able to give more to my church.

Without digging into the legislative history, I can tell you that it’s at least been around since 2009. If I had to guess I’d say it probably was originally created with the 2006 Pension Protection Act. Every time that it was to expire the provision has been reinstated – but now it’s only active until 12/31/2014 (not extended into 2015 at present).

Thanks a bunch. I could not find this info earlier and the person who I talked just a day or so ago seemed ignorant of the subject even though he was a private client advisor for Chase Bank in Seattle. Now I am stuck with being able to take advantage of this situation. I have searched the web several times fot QCD info and recently just found this article. The advisor is not on vacation to the end of the year and it appears I will not be able to have the funds send elsewhere instead of deducting taxes and suffering for an increase income.
